Estee Lauder

Estee Lauder is one of the most recognized perfumerers. Throughout her life, she was heavily involved in every part of her company's operation. She loved the work, and this was evident every bottle of fragrance.

Estee was born in Queens, New York in 1908. Her birth name was Josephine Ester Mentzer. Her father was a custom tailor by trade, and also went on to open a hardware store. He was, perhaps, the source of Estee's solid entrepreneurial skills. It was her uncle John Shotz, however, who spurred this vivacious woman into her career in the beauty industry. He was a chemist and was known for his creations and concoctions born from his makeshift laboratory located behind her family home. He warned her about the damage detergent soaps could do to the skin and instead showed her to make the cream that would launch her business.

Estee Lauder was skilled in marketing and revolutionized the way the beauty industry promoted their products. She lead the way in giveaway promotions, always including free lipstick with each gift package. A testament to the quality of her products was the way in which the brand grew by word-of-mouth. She made sure each product over-delivered and the women who used her products gladly recommended them to their friends, and thus was born the 'Tell-a-Woman' marketing.

In 1953 Estee released Youth Dew that doubly served as a bath oil and perfume. It is no surprise that the fragrance is still a top seller today. It is unusually colored in a sexy black. The bottle includes curves that bring to mind the body of a real woman. It also has a tall, gold top and cute bow-tied ribbon.

Estee Lauder continued to add to its luxurious fragrances. In 1995 The Pleasures range was launched. The range was expanded to include Pleasure Delight, Pleasures Intense and Pleasures Exotic. In 2005, actress Gwyneth Paltrow became the face of the range. It is purely floral and is sweet fusion of lilies, peonies, jasmine and karo-karounde and baie rose.

More recently In January 2007, Beautiful Love made its debut. It is an extension of , a fragrance launched in 1985. The perfume's notes include jasmin, mango, white freesia, rose, patchouli and sandalwood. Emerald Dream was also released in 2007. It is exclusively distributed in travel retail shops. It has top notes of tangerine, blue basil, honey suckle, and apricot. Mediterranean mimosa, emerald orchid, marigold, plum, iris, violet and cyclame make up the middle note. The base is a mix of blue cypress, Hawaiian kamani and sandal woods and beach skin accord.

The perfume house also now provides men's fragrances. These include; Lauder for Men, Pleasures for Men, Beyond Paradise Men and Intuition for Men. The brand today also houses Clinique, a cosmetic line that caters to both men and women.

From a concoction formulated in a backyard shed, Estee Lauder has become the epitome of a successful businesswoman. This company is known for it revolutionary products and dedication to quality. Although Estee Lauder passed away in 2004, her ambitious spirit and love of the good things in life will linger in the minds of many.
